How Much Does an Aquarium Weigh?
Installed weight depends on water, tank materials, bracing, overflow configuration, cabinetry, décor, and equipment.
Aquarium weight is often underestimated because water is only one piece of the total load. A complete system includes the tank material (glass or acrylic), bottom panel (glass or PVC), top bracing, stand, rockwork, substrate, and sometimes filtration equipment located under the tank.
Common installed weight ranges (examples)
- 75 gallon: often ~900–1,200 lb installed depending on stand and décor
- 120 gallon: often ~1,100–1,500 lb installed depending on tank material, stand, and décor
- 180 gallon: often ~1,800–2,500 lb installed depending on bracing, stand, and décor
- 500 gallon (glass): commonly ~6,000–8,000+ lb installed depending on materials and décor
- 1,000 gallon (glass + steel bracing): commonly ~12,000–16,000+ lb installed depending on design and décor

How Aquarium Loads Compare to Typical Floor Ratings
Aquariums create concentrated loads. Footprint and load distribution matter.
Residential floors are commonly discussed in pounds per square foot (PSF). Aquariums can create high localized PSF values because thousands of pounds may be distributed over a relatively small footprint. The calculator provides an average PSF across the tank footprint, but structural behavior still depends on framing layout and how the stand transfers load into the structure.
Key factors that affect how a floor responds include joist direction, span length, beam placement, bearing walls, and whether the stand spreads load evenly or concentrates it at a few contact points.
Glass vs Acrylic Weight Comparison
Acrylic is less dense than glass, but acrylic tanks are often built thicker. Panel weight can be similar depending on thickness.
Acrylic is lighter per cubic foot than glass. However, large acrylic aquariums often require thicker panels than glass tanks of similar size. Because of this, total panel weight may be similar depending on the build.
A practical comparison: 3/4" glass is about 9.75 lb/sq ft and 1.5" acrylic is about 9.25 lb/sq ft. In very large systems using 2" to 3" acrylic, panel weight per square foot increases substantially. In most installations, water weight remains the dominant load factor.
