1400 Gallon Reef Aquarium Long Beach Island NJ
1400 Gallon Custom Built-In Reef Aquarium in Long Beach Island NJ
Custom 1400 gallon built-in saltwater reef aquarium designed and installed for a luxury coastal home in Long Beach Island, New Jersey. The aquarium was integrated into custom wall paneling beside the billiards and entertainment area, creating a large living centerpiece within the main living space.
Project Overview
Custom 1400 gallon built-in saltwater reef aquarium designed for a luxury coastal residence in Long Beach Island, NJ.
This aquarium was created as a major feature within the home’s entertainment and billiards area. The display was built into custom wood wall paneling so the aquarium feels like part of the architecture, not something added later.
A system of this size takes planning long before the finished room comes together. Aqua Creations coordinated the aquarium dimensions, steel support stand, cabinetry openings, electrical needs, plumbing paths, service access, and remote filtration requirements during the construction process.
The display was designed with a large custom reef insert, open swim space, and strong visual depth so the aquarium could be enjoyed from across the room. Behind the finished display is a full life support system designed to handle the water volume, filtration, circulation, and long-term maintenance needs of a large saltwater aquarium.
This project included aquarium design, fabrication coordination, delivery, installation, plumbing, filtration planning, and ongoing aquarium maintenance by Aqua Creations.
Design and Construction Coordination
Large built in reef aquariums require significant planning long before the finished display is installed. During the early construction phase, Aqua Creations coordinated the aquarium dimensions, steel support framing, plumbing pathways, electrical requirements, cabinetry integration, and long term service access directly with the construction team.
Because the aquarium was designed as part of the architecture of the home, careful attention was given to viewing height, structural support, surrounding finishes, and the hidden infrastructure required to support a large saltwater reef system.
Early coordination allowed the aquarium to integrate cleanly into the entertainment space while maintaining proper functionality, accessibility, and long term serviceability behind the scenes.
Aquarium Fabrication and Assembly
Large custom acrylic aquariums of this scale require extensive fabrication planning and specialty coordination long before final installation begins. This aquarium was constructed using extra-thick acrylic panels exceeding two inches in thickness to support the size and structural demands of the system while maintaining long term clarity and durability.
The aquarium was designed with external overflow systems positioned on both sides of the aquarium. All plumbing connections, circulation lines, and overflow infrastructure were concealed within the surrounding wall system to maintain a clean architectural appearance from the finished living space. Black acrylic side panels were incorporated into the design to fully hide the overflow structures and internal plumbing from view.
Custom reef insert fabrication and coordination was also incorporated into the aquarium build process. Aqua Creations worked directly with the specialty reef insert fabricators to coordinate sizing, layout, fabrication sequencing, and final installation requirements to ensure the completed design integrated properly within the aquarium system.
Due to the large dimensions of the decorative reef structures, the inserts needed to be positioned inside the aquarium prior to final acrylic assembly. Careful coordination between fabrication, insert placement, transportation, and final installation sequencing was required throughout the project to complete the system successfully.
Aquarium Installation Process
Installing a large built in aquarium of this scale requires extensive coordination during construction. The aquarium was positioned onto a custom steel support structure before surrounding finishes and cabinetry were completed, allowing the system to integrate cleanly into the architecture of the home.
Careful planning was required for delivery access, structural support, plumbing pathways, electrical routing, and long term maintenance accessibility behind the walls. Because the aquarium was designed as part of the construction process from the beginning, the final installation was able to maintain clean sight lines and seamless integration into the finished entertainment space.
Remote Filtration and Infrastructure
One of the major advantages on this project was the raised construction of the coastal home due to flooding requirements near the ocean. The large crawl space below the structure allowed Aqua Creations to run extensive plumbing lines from the aquarium to a dedicated remote filtration and equipment room located roughly 20 feet away from the display.
Large reef aquarium systems require significantly more infrastructure behind the scenes than most people realize. The remote equipment room houses the circulation systems, filtration equipment, water processing systems, pumps, and life support equipment required to maintain long term reef stability while keeping the main living space clean and uncluttered.
Designing the filtration remotely also helped reduce noise within the entertainment area while allowing easier long term service access and maintenance behind the scenes.
Final Reef Aquarium Display
Video coming soon…..
The completed aquarium was designed to function as both a large scale reef system and a major architectural feature within the home. Integrated directly into the entertainment and billiards area, the aquarium creates movement, depth, and a living focal point visible throughout the space.
By combining early construction coordination, custom cabinetry integration, remote filtration infrastructure, and long term service planning, the final system was able to blend cleanly into the home while still supporting the extensive life support requirements of a large custom reef aquarium.
Unlike this Long Beach Island aquarium which was designed using custom reef inserts for a clean architectural appearance and lower-maintenance long-term structure, some aquarium systems are built as fully live reef environments using live coral and natural biological filtration. See our Custom Peninsula Reef Aquarium Room Divider in Lakewood NJ project for an example of a large-scale live coral reef aquarium integrated into a completed home.
Projects of this scale require careful planning across every phase of construction, installation, filtration design, and long term maintenance to ensure both visual impact and long term system stability.
