Custom Kitchen Aquarium Built Into Backsplash in Brooklyn NY
Custom Kitchen Aquarium Built Into Backsplash in Brooklyn NY
Project Overview
This custom freshwater aquarium was installed during the construction of a new home in Brooklyn, NY. The homeowners wanted a fish tank that would become part of the house itself rather than simply placing an aquarium against a wall after construction was complete.
The location chosen for the aquarium was between the kitchen and family room. Like many families, they spend a large portion of their day in the kitchen and wanted the aquarium somewhere it could be enjoyed constantly rather than tucked away in a less frequently used room.
At the same time, they wanted to maintain an open view into the family room. With young children in the home, being able to see what was happening in the next room while preparing meals or spending time in the kitchen was important. The custom freshwater fish tank provided a unique solution by creating a viewing window between the spaces while adding something far more interesting than a standard wall opening.
Today, colorful freshwater fish move through a display that can be enjoyed throughout the day from the kitchen while still allowing visibility into the family room beyond. The result is a custom built-in fish tank that feels like it has always been part of the home’s design.
Kitchen Fish Tank Design and Planning
One of the advantages of incorporating a custom aquarium during new construction is that everything can be planned before the surrounding finishes are completed.
The aquarium opening was positioned directly within the future backsplash area of the kitchen. Because the tank would eventually become surrounded by finished stonework, it was important to determine early how the filtration equipment, maintenance access, and support structure would be handled.
Unlike a standard aquarium installation where access is available from all sides, a built-in fish tank requires planning long before water ever enters the system. The goal was to create a clean finished appearance from the kitchen while making sure the aquarium could still be serviced easily for years to come.
Construction and Installation
Before the surrounding millwork and finishes were installed, the aquarium and support stand were positioned from the family room side of the home and aligned with the future kitchen opening.
Although the aquarium is viewed primarily from the kitchen, all maintenance access was intentionally designed from the family room side. Once the backsplash and surrounding finishes were completed, there would be no practical way to access equipment from the kitchen side of the aquarium.
The filtration system was installed beneath the aquarium and concealed within custom cabinetry and wall-unit millwork. Access panels allow feeding, equipment servicing, and routine aquarium maintenance while keeping pumps, filtration equipment, and aquarium accessories hidden from view.
Proper access planning is one of the most important parts of any custom aquarium installation. While the finished fish tank is what everyone notices, thoughtful planning behind the scenes is what allows the system to remain easy to maintain long after construction is complete.
Completed Freshwater Aquarium
Once completed, the aquarium became one of the most talked-about features in the home.
Viewed from the kitchen, the freshwater fish tank immediately draws attention. Fish move through the display throughout the day, creating a constantly changing scene that adds life and color to the space. Unlike artwork or decorative finishes that remain static, a living aquarium is always changing.
The location also allows the homeowners to enjoy the aquarium where they spend much of their time each day. Whether preparing meals, entertaining guests, or simply passing through the kitchen, the aquarium remains a central feature of the home while preserving views into the family room beyond.

Why Build a Fish Tank Into a Kitchen?
Most people don’t immediately think of the kitchen when planning a custom aquarium, but it can be one of the best locations in a home.
The kitchen is often where family members gather, conversations take place, and guests naturally congregate. By placing the aquarium in a space that is used every day, the homeowners are able to enjoy the fish tank far more often than they would if it were located in a separate room.
For this Brooklyn project, the aquarium also served another purpose. Rather than creating a simple opening between the kitchen and family room, the freshwater fish tank became a living feature that maintains visibility between the spaces while adding movement, color, and personality to the home.
Projects like this demonstrate how a custom fish tank can be incorporated into everyday living spaces while remaining practical, serviceable, and enjoyable for years to come.
