Custom Bullnose Freshwater Aquarium for a Medical Waiting Room in Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Custom Bullnose Freshwater Aquarium for a Medical Waiting Room in Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Aqua Creations designed and installed this custom freshwater aquarium as part of a medical office waiting room renovation in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Rather than selecting a standard aquarium and building the room around it, this project required the aquarium itself to follow the architecture of the space.
The finished aquarium measures 96 inches long, 14 inches front to back, and 48 inches tall. Constructed from 1.25-inch-thick acrylic, the aquarium features a custom bullnose end designed to match the exact radius of the surrounding waiting room. The result is a built-in fish tank that feels like an intentional part of the interior design while creating a calming focal point for patients and visitors.
Project Overview
Located within a busy medical facility in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, this custom aquarium project was designed to enhance the waiting room experience while complementing the overall architectural vision of the space.
Unlike a traditional rectangular fish tank, this freshwater aquarium incorporated a curved bullnose front that mirrored the radius of the surrounding millwork and ceiling details. Achieving this level of integration required careful planning during the design and fabrication stages to ensure the finished aquarium aligned perfectly with the room.
A Custom Aquarium Designed Around the Space
One of the most unique aspects of this project was that the architecture dictated the aquarium design. The curved elements throughout the waiting room created an opportunity to develop a custom aquarium that would become part of the room itself rather than simply serving as an added feature.
The bullnose shape of the aquarium was fabricated to match the exact radius of the surrounding architecture. From the custom cabinetry to the ceiling details, every element worked together to create a cohesive appearance throughout the space.
When completed, the aquarium looked as though it had always been part of the original design of the medical office.
Commercial Aquarium Installation and Coordination
Projects of this nature require coordination well beyond the aquarium itself. The installation process involved integrating the aquarium with the surrounding construction schedule while ensuring the finished product aligned with the design intent of the space.
Aqua Creations fabricated and installed a custom steel support structure designed specifically for the curved footprint of the aquarium. Construction photographs from the project document the process, showing both the structural support system and the aquarium in place prior to completion of the surrounding finishes.
This type of planning is an important part of commercial aquarium installation, particularly in healthcare environments where aesthetics, durability, and long-term functionality all play an important role.
Designing Within a Narrow Footprint
While the aquarium spans eight feet in length and stands four feet tall, its narrow 14-inch front-to-back dimension created one of the project’s greatest challenges.
The 1.25-inch acrylic walls were necessary to provide the strength required for a tall commercial installation. However, the thickness of the acrylic further reduced the usable interior space available for décor and aquascaping.
Creating an attractive freshwater display within these constraints required careful planning. The goal was to establish depth and visual interest while maintaining open swimming areas and preserving the clean appearance appropriate for a professional medical setting.
Branch-style décor and a restrained aquascaping approach helped achieve a natural look without overcrowding the aquarium. The finished display feels balanced, modern, and proportional to the surrounding room.
Final Aquarium Features
Today, the completed aquarium serves as a centerpiece within the waiting area, adding movement, color, and a sense of tranquility to the space.
The custom bullnose design, combined with the natural freshwater aquascape, creates an engaging display for patients and visitors while reinforcing the overall architectural character of the room.
Final Aquarium Features
As part of the same waiting room project, Aqua Creations also installed a custom water wall within the space. While the aquarium remained the focal point of this installation, the additional water feature helped contribute to the calming and welcoming atmosphere envisioned for the medical office.
