Custom Step-Down Reef Aquarium Office Divider in Horsham PA
Custom Step-Down Reef Aquarium Office Divider in Horsham PA
Project Overview
This custom reef aquarium was installed at the headquarters of Turn14 Distribution in Horsham, Pennsylvania. The project was designed as part of a modern executive office layout where the client wanted to create a connection between two offices while still maintaining privacy between the spaces.
Rather than using a traditional wall, the client wanted something that would allow light and openness to pass between the offices without creating a direct line of sight from one workspace into the other. A custom built-in reef aquarium provided the perfect solution.
One of the unique features of this project is the custom step-down aquarium design. Unlike a traditional aquarium with a single water depth, this reef aquarium was built with two distinct elevations that create additional depth and visual interest throughout the display. The varying heights of the reef structure help maintain privacy while creating a more dynamic viewing experience from both offices.
The result is a custom reef aquarium that functions as both a living room divider and one of the most distinctive features within the company’s executive offices.
Reef Aquarium Design and Office Integration
The goal of this project was not simply to install an aquarium. The aquarium needed to become part of the office environment while solving a practical design challenge.
The executives wanted to open the offices to one another while maintaining separation between the spaces. The aquarium allows light and visibility to pass through the dividing wall while the reef rock structure creates a natural privacy screen.
Unlike glass partitions or standard office walls, the reef aquarium introduces movement, color, and constantly changing activity into the workspace. Employees and visitors experience a living reef ecosystem rather than a traditional divider.
The custom aquarium was designed from the beginning to become a permanent part of the office environment, integrating with the surrounding millwork and wall system while maintaining easy access for long-term operation.
Custom Step-Down Reef Aquarium Design
One of the defining features of this project is the custom step-down aquarium layout.
The aquarium was designed with two separate viewing elevations rather than a standard rectangular footprint. This stepped configuration creates additional depth throughout the reef structure and allows the aquascaping to transition naturally between different heights.
The higher section helps provide privacy between the executive offices while the lower section opens sightlines and creates a more open feel between the spaces.
From an aquascaping standpoint, the step-down design also creates opportunities for different reef zones throughout the aquarium. Rockwork, coral placement, and fish activity can be viewed from multiple elevations, giving the display a much larger appearance than a traditional single-level reef aquarium.
The result is a reef aquarium that appears different from every viewing angle while serving a functional role within the office design.
Construction and Installation
Before the finished wall system was installed, the aquarium, support structure, and filtration system were positioned within the opening between the offices.
The custom aquarium was engineered as a complete life-support system, including a steel support structure, integrated sump filtration, circulation systems, plumbing, and equipment necessary to support a thriving reef aquarium.
Installing the aquarium before the surrounding millwork allowed all equipment and service requirements to be incorporated into the design from the beginning rather than being added later as an afterthought.
Careful planning during construction ensured the aquarium would remain fully serviceable once the finished wall panels were installed.
Hidden Filtration and Service Access
One of the most important parts of this project is what remains hidden behind the finished wall system.
The custom wood-paneled wall surrounding the aquarium conceals the filtration equipment, plumbing, pumps, and support systems required to operate a successful reef aquarium. While the finished display appears clean and simple from the office side, a fully accessible service area was incorporated behind the panels.
The concealed access system allows routine feeding, equipment inspections, maintenance, and servicing without disrupting the appearance of the executive offices.
Proper filtration access is one of the most important aspects of any built-in aquarium installation. While the display aquarium receives the attention, the hidden life-support systems are what allow the reef to thrive long-term.
Completed Reef Aquarium
Once completed and stocked, the aquarium quickly became one of the most recognizable features within the office.
Viewed from either office, the reef aquarium creates a unique visual connection between the spaces while maintaining privacy through the carefully designed rockwork structure. The combination of the step-down design, custom aquascaping, and integrated wall system creates an appearance that feels like it was always intended to be part of the building.
As the reef matures and coral growth continues, the aquarium continues to evolve, creating a display that changes over time rather than remaining static.
The finished result is a custom reef aquarium that serves as both a functional office divider and a living feature enjoyed daily by employees and visitors alike.
Ongoing Reef Aquarium Maintenance and Support
Like most Aqua Creations projects, our involvement did not end once the installation was completed.
Following startup, Aqua Creations supplied and introduced the livestock for the aquarium, including fish and reef inhabitants selected specifically for the system. We continue to provide ongoing aquarium maintenance and support to ensure the reef remains healthy and operating properly.
Our technician visits the aquarium every two weeks to perform glass cleaning, water testing, equipment inspections, livestock evaluations, and routine reef aquarium maintenance.
From custom aquarium design and installation to livestock selection, aquarium service, and long-term maintenance, Aqua Creations provides complete support for freshwater and reef aquarium systems throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York.
Commercial Reef Aquariums for Offices and Corporate Spaces
Custom aquariums can serve many purposes within commercial environments. In addition to creating a memorable visual feature, aquariums can be used as office dividers, privacy screens, focal points, lobby displays, and architectural elements within corporate spaces.
This Horsham project demonstrates how a custom reef aquarium can solve practical design challenges while creating a feature that employees and visitors enjoy every day.
Whether incorporated into an executive office, healthcare facility, corporate headquarters, or commercial lobby, a properly designed aquarium can become one of the most distinctive features within the space.
